The National Model Railroad Association is the largest organization devoted to the development, promotion, and enjoyment of the hobby of model railroading. The NMRA was founded in 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in order to provide a service to the hobby of model railroading. The web site has a great deal of information. I've been a member of the NMRA for many years. Site has links to many sites.

www.trains.com/mrr
This is the home of various train related magazines, including Model Railroader, Classic Trains, and Garden Railways. Their site has many articles that can be downloaded, some for even for free. If you want to get started in the hobby, Model Railroader is a great magazine to subscribe to.

www.walthers.com
Walthers is the largest supplier of Model Railroad Equipment in all scales. Their catalog book is famous since it includes most of the model railroad items available. They have excellent service and you can buy their items from your local hobby shop or directly from them, assuming you don't have a local hobby shop near you.

www.rrmodelcraftsman.com
Another Magazine that I subscribe to. It has many project ideas and also deals with more advanced topics such as building structures from scratch.

modeltechstudios.com
Model Tech Studios. Their craftsman kits are excellent, I've purchased various maritime kits from them.
