Jim,
I'm running out of time to get your nice chart included in my handout. The F7 chart looks fine, and I'll send notes in this message in case you can make a similar F3 chart (real quick today) that could go the back side of the same handout page. If we're out of time, it will be a resource on the Web instead.
All these phase changes come from Ed Hawkins, by the way, so he should get credit too.
July 46 - Ist F2's - (same as F3 phase 1 body but with FT electrical system)
- has chiken wire in grille area, short rear vent in grille area, 3 portholes, small FT number boards, 4 highhfans on roof, 2 rectangular DB openings on roof
Dec 46 - last F2's produced
Nov- 46 - begin F3 Phase 1 - looks same as F2 but with new electrical system
Dec 46 - change from small to large number boards on roof (with few exceptions)
[ATSF 16-21 fit here, as delivered in Nov 46]
Feb-May 47 - begin F3 Phase 2 Early - change from 3 portholes (on A unit) to chicken wire over 4 openings between 2 portholes, change from short to long rear vent in grille area (still with chicken wire)
[ATSF 16-21 were changed to this phase in 1948, lasted into 1952]
Dec 47/Apr 48 - begin F3 Phase 2 Late - change from high fans to normal fans
Mar-Jun 48 - begin F3 Phase 3 - remove chicken wire from between portholes, cover openings with 4 horizontal louvers
[ATSF 22-30 fit here, as delivered in Mar-Jun-Sep 48] [yes, 30 was definitely Phase 3, not Phase 4!!]
Aug-Nov 48 - begin F3 Phase 4 ("F5") - remove chicken wire from grille area and add horizontal grille
[ATSF 31-36 fit here, as delivered in Oct 48 - Jan 49]
[ATSF 200-201 also fit here, as delivered in Oct-Nov 48]
Feb 49 - last F3's produced
[1951/52 - add vertical grilles to 22-30, and to 31-36]
[1952 - add horizontal (?) grille and horizontal louvers to ATSF 16-21]
[1953? - change to vertical grille and vertical louvers on ATSF 16-21]
[note - ATSF 16-21 had long warbonnet and silver paint, 22-36 had short warbonnet and stainless steel panels]
If you can somehow send me a chart of this by the end of today, I'll try to include it.
Thanks,
John
