My pictures from Colorado February 24-March3 2001
On BNSF WB=NB, EB=SB on the Colorado section, I didn't catch how Raton Pass was defined.I did not know that BNSF and UP didn't call out train symbols like CSX and Conrail do out here in the east. I was born and raised in Colorado, but never had a scanner until I moved to NY for training and a friend here gave me his old one. Thus I did not have symbols to report, I apologize to those who are symbol junkies.
Due to renumbering fun and me alone with no video backup: No distinctions on Heritage 1.1, 1.2, and 2.0

F. B. E. tells me "The extended drawbar and draft gear is to allow the unit to push gondolas of sugar beets under the water washer without getting the unit electricals wet and shorting them out. This was not a problem when sugar refineries used steam engines or fireless cookers but the advent of diesels brought about this structural change."
Rick Bacon says: "The Great Western Sugar Company (not the Great Western Railroad, once owned by the sugar company) bought secondÊhand from the Rio Grande in 1954, a GE 44 ton diesel locomotive #40 (builder #15127 Sep 42') for use at theÊJohnstown, CO factory. At that time it was used only to switch the factory's yard and not to move beets, a job reservedÊfor a steam dinky due to the previously mentioned wash rack and the havoc it plays on electric traction motors. TheÊmodification for the wash rack must have come later. I can't say for sure if these two are the same locomotive, but IÊbelieve there's a good chance. FWIW Amalgamated Sugar is a current successor to the Great Western Sugar Company.ÊThe locomotive was probably bought along with the Brighton, CO factory or one of the other factories now used forÊstorage and moved to Brighton were it currently rests. My source for most of this is a book; SUGAR TRAMP,ÊCOLORADO'S GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY by Gary Morgan published by Centennial Publishing in 1975 (out of print). P.S. If this is the former D&RGW #40 it would be the second oldest Rio Grande standard gauge locomotive still inexistence. (Oldest is #583 a 2-8-0 on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO.)" Rick Bacon 3 Greeley, CO
Roger says: Ken Ardinger supplied the following info on the DRG&W 44 tonners.:Amalgamated Sugar at Brighton,CO has this unit-b/n 15127 9/42 ex Great Western Sugar 40 ex DRGW 40. The DRGW sold it to GW in 5/18/54, Johnstown, CO; I shot it there in 6/71 with GW paint, but no number I have a shot of it as Amalgamated Sugar no number Brighton,CO 7/90
DRGW 38 GE 44 ton b/n 13096 8/41 went to Great Lakes Carbon #12 in St.Louis,MO,have slide as 12 dated 10/71;present status not known.
DRGW 39 GE 44 ton b/n 15123 9/42 went through a number of short lines before going to Stevenson, AL, Rust Engineering to Mead Container, then the city of Stevenson,AL & put on display.
