March 2007 was when I finally got round to experiencing a 'proper' dining train. With the family I joined the Blue Pullman's 'London Bridges Lunch' tour. This was only a lunch trip, leaving London's Cannon Street station at around 11:00, and terminating at Victoria at 15:00. The journey was a circular tour around south London featuring four crossings of the Thames, hence the name. The train is made up of eight dinning cars (ex Virgin West Coast first class MKIIs) and two MKI kitchen cars. A class 47 at each end allows the train to reverse in what are normally EMU only stations. We had 47843 on the back and 47853 in 'XP64' blue on the front.

The only scheduled stop was 10 minutes at Wimbledon to allow for a crew change but we didn't stay the full 10 minutes there. The train was on time or early throughout pretty much. A minor diversion occurred early on in the journey when we turned left at Blackheath and took the route through Woolwich Dockyard to Crayford Spur, the train was booked to run via Bexleyheath. I never found out the reason for this. Food on board was excellent as was the service. I'd heard good things about the Blue Pullman but the experience still exceeded my expectations. At £60 per person it was great value and I look forward to trying it again one day.
