The Silver Rail Tavern
225 Yonge Street Toronto

The newly-built Silver Rail was among the first seven bars in Toronto permitted to sell liquor by the glass when on Thursday, April 3, 1947 new laws came into effect. People had been drinking beer and wine in licensed tap rooms and hotel bars since 1933 but this was the first time since 1917 people were permitted to order a drink at a bar. The War Measures Act brought about a Canada-wide prohibition to prevent impairment of its men. Others included lounges in the Royal York Hotel, Barclay Hotel and Windsor Arms as well as the Club Norman on Adelaide Street East where 2,300 people filled it on the first night!
