Cowan's Cocoa and Chocolate

Cowan's Cocoa and Chocolate plant at 72 Sterling Road on the Old Bruce. Soon after this 1922 photograph was taken Cowan's founded in 1899 by John M.Cowan, was in financial difficulty and was sold in 1926 to the English Rowntree chocolate business becoming Rowntree & Company. It successfully continued in business being acquired by Nestle in 1988 which purchased the entire Rowntree business worldwide which by that time included Laura Secord. This was the last industry on the Old Bruce service track receiving covered hopper cars of sugar from Redpath sugar on the Queens Quay which had to be sent to Toronto Yard for weighing. Obviously, not a very profitable move for Canadian Pacific considering the short distance and multiple handling required of these cars.
