Hawaii
The Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by the United States on
June 16, 1893 when US Marines invaded the country to protect the interests
of certain US businessmen engaged in sugar exports. The Queen was kept under
house arrest until her death in 1917.
The Republic of Hawaii was established in 1894 with Sandford Dole (of pineapple
fame) as its president.
Hawaii was annexed July 7, 1898 and later became a state in 1959.
