Excursion
In
conjunction with the Port of Tillamook Bay, Sunset Coast Excursions will be
offering two fall colors railfan excursions along the POTB's line this Autumn.
These will be the line's only excursions run by railfans, for railfans as well
as the general public.
The first train
of the SCE Salmonberry Fall
Colors Series will run Oct. 27-28, with a second train scheduled for Nov. 3-4.
Both trains will be pulled by SD-9 4368, which will be specially painted in
SP's classic Black Widow paint scheme for the event. Another diesel locomotive
will also accompany the five car train.
The trains will
depart Buxton on 
Saturday,
and travel across the line to Garibaldi. On the way, you'll enjoy the dramatic
scenery - high trestles, steep grades, tunnels, and beautiful riverside running.
Most all of the 64 rare miles are accessible only by rail. And you'll get to
see it in all of its splendor, decked out in a coat of beautiful fall colors.
After turning
the train in Garibaldi, you'll detrain in Rockaway Beach for the night, staying
in one of the resort town's wonderful hotels, then depart again 
Sunday
morning for the return trip. Both days will include a continental breakfast
featuring our own special coffee blend, and a sack lunch with a scrumptious
sandwich from the Bayfront Bakery in Garibaldi. (If you've never tried their
fresh sandwiches with homemade breads, you don't know what you've been missing).
The itinerary for these special runs includes two to three photo runbys per day, plus a meet with the hill freight on Sunday. There will also be a stop for lunch and a historic interpretive display each day. And to keep it interesting, the itineraries for both trips will be different. Each train will depart at 9:00 a.m., and will arrive sometime between 5:00 p.m. and 6 p.m. (Naturally, the schedule is subject to change due to the freight schedule and other considerations.)
Round trip fare is $109 plus hotel for coach seating, $149 for dome. One-way fare is $69, and includes a return to Buxton by bus. We are presently working with the hotels in Rockaway Beach to provide streamlined booking.
