2nd Annual Centerville & Southwestern night
2006 |
||
Join the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians in celebrating the world's finest miniature railroad. On June 24th, ride the Centerville & Southwestern from 4:00pm to 7:30pm and then retire to our newly refurbished museum to watch slide shows covering the history from 1938 to present.
This minature railroad operated for 32 years on the Becker Dairy farm in Roseland, NJ. The construction of Interstate 280 forced the re-routing of the railroad. In 1972 the railroad was closed for the final time. The 4-8-4 "Pocono" type live steam engine was packed up and donated to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. After a short period of time on display, the engine was auctioned off and is now in the hands of a private individual. The rest of the C&S was packed up and moved into a horse barn in one of Monmouth County's parks. It was stored there for over 20 years until the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians learned of its extistence, and with the help of the town of Phillipsburg, acquired the railroad for operation at their Museum. It has slowly been refurbished and restored and now operating on special days on the Museum grounds. It is expected to be extended to South Main Street with the cooperation of New Jersey Transit and the town of Phillipsburg. Eventually, it is planned to continue on to the New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center when it is completed in the former Pennsylvania yard along the Delaware River. |
