Bridge: Rahway River Trestle Union/Springfield Border | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Rahway River Trestle on the Union/Springfield border has lain dormant since as early as the 1980's. When the Rahway Valley Railroad's business dried up north of the bridge in Springfield and Summit, service was relegated to just south of the bridge and effectively put the bridge out of service. For being over one hundred years old, the trestle (actually a truss, but referred to as a "Trestle" in the area) has remained mostly in tact. When it looked like the Rahway Valley Railroad might be reactivated in the early 2000's track crews of the Morristown & Erie Railway, contracted to rebuild the line, made it as far as the south side of the bridge. MOW vehicles also made their way across the trestle, the first wheels to do so for the better part of two decades. As part of the rehabilitation the trestle's guardrails were subsequently removed. However funding for the project dried up and left the trestle mostly untouched, to perhaps languish for another twenty years.
