Western Maryland purchased 2 BL-2s as numbers 81 and 82 in October 1948. These engines were delivered in the steam era fireball scheme and were repainted to the black and gold paint scheme. As thses units did not do well in road service (their frames were prone to cracking when in MU'd lashups) they were both eventually assigned to yard service at Hagerstown where they finished their careers. 81 was coupled to slug trailer unit 138T and 82 was assigned to slug trailer 139T. Chessie renumberd these two units 7181 and 7182 and they were eventually renumbered 7171 and 7172 to avoid a number conflict with some new MARC commuter engines.
