Portland to Chicago Photos

These photos were shot with a Minolta Freedom III Pocket Camera using Kodak ASA 100 Film.

(27K) Mountains near Libby, MT 3/28/97

(44K) More mountain scenery near Libby, MT 3/28/97

(42K) Libby, MT mountains 3/28/97

(56K) At the Whitefish, MT Depot, a Great Northern SW1500 switcher sits idle on a siding, 3/28/97

(56K) Beautiful snow views outside of Whitefish MT, 3/28/97

(27K) Photo out the rear window of my car. The Superliner car is taller than the MHC car, providing a nice view. Too bad it was the filthiest window I had ever seen! 3/28/97

(41K) Leaving the mountains, there are nothing but plains as far as the eye could see. 3/28/97

(59K) Everything I needed to record sounds: micro cassette recorder, scanner and earphones. Cup of coffee (empty), Oreo cookies, portable stereo and a magazine added a nice touch. I left the scanner and recorder in auto-record mode using the VOX setting.

(52K) Entrance to Havre, MT depot 3/28/97

(50K) Back of our train at Havre, MT, 3/28/97

(54K) Towards the front of the train, a view of the platform. Wind gusts were 50+ MPH which made it hard to shoot clear photographs. 3/28/97

(37K) A BN SW1500 switcher on a siding at Havre, MT, 3/28/97

(62K) Great Northern Railway steam locomotive #2584 at Havre, MT 3/28/97

(127K) Front view of Great Northern Railway 2-4-2 locomotive 2584. 3/28/97

(79K) I would love a cab ride on this locomotive! 3/28/97

(39K) Smoking was permitted in a single room on the lower level of one coach car. Ventillation in this room was entirely separate from the rest of the train to prevent smoke from spreading. Photo taken at Havre, MT 3/28/97

(35K) About an hour out of Minneapolis, MN, some kind of factory in full swing. 3/29/97.

(44K) St. Paul/Minneapolis station viewed from outside my car. 3/29/97.

(56K) The sign says it all.

(28K) I am continually amazed the skill of baggage cart drivers. Here is one towing **FIVE** baggage trailors! This is a train in itself! The man driving this is in the orange cart behind the forklift that drove into the photo just as I snapped it. My hands were still cold from running around outside so it took me awhile to get the camera ready. 3/29/97

(38K) I wanted to get some shots of our power while at St. Paul, but the yellow sign said otherwise. Fuel truck and baggage crews were also in the way.

(38K) I really like the new paint scheme of BNSF. Photo taken south of St. Paul, MN, 3/29/97

(51K) A track gang takes a break to let us go by in the St. Paul yards. 3/29/97

(43K) I loved the architecture of this station. Too bad our stop was only for 30 seconds! 3/29/97

(58K) The Best Western, Inn of Chicago on 162 E. Ohio Ave (corner of Michigan Ave provided a great location to shop (which I couldn't because it was Easter and the shops were closed!), 3/30/97

(26K) In my room, I was finally able to write more of my trip report. I was not able to use the laptop in my room on the Empire Builder.

(47K) The most beautiful sight after a long train trip!
