A CSX derailment at AF wipes out the brand-new turnouts at the interlocking. VRE service interrupted,
morning traffic nasty around northern Virginia as a result.
RO: July 8, 1997
Just south of the Long Bridge over the Potomac, a northbound CSX freight derailed
its last ten cars, which struck the rear of a southbound Amtrak train. It occurred in
the early evening, interrupting commuter service
There were three injured.
AF: July 23, 1996
A broken rail caused a three-train mess and a two-day line closure. Two CSX
trains were meeting, while both were passing a stopped NS/CP train. About the
last 10 cars of the northbound derailed, taking the last 7 southbound cars with it,
as well as 10 cars from the middle of the NS train.
