Hi and welcome to Rusty Rails!  This site is primarily for sharing information and photographs of abandoned railroads that I have explored.  There is information from active lines and derailments, but most of the pictures and information is regarding lines that no longer run trains.  I hope you enjoy your visit to the site!

Why this fascination with abandoned railroads?

That's a good question, and I'm not sure that I have the answer.  I would guess that it is a combination of things.  They include an interest in history, a link to the past, and a fascination with what was, and now is gone. In exploring an abandoned line you never know what will be around the next curve, what artifacts will be found, and what their connection is with history.  As the web site Abandoned Railroads of the U.S. says, each of these former lines has a story of its own.

While the wife thinks this hobby is a little "strange", I know that there are more Abandoned Rail Fans out there.
