Our Country Needs Amtrak Intercity Trains Today More Than Ever Before. Due to congestion, gridlock and high fuel prices. To date, the Amtrak Board has not summited a funding request for Amtrak FY-2006. Why did the board miss the Feb 15,2005 deadline? Here we are 2 months later and the Amtrak Board still has not made any funding request to Congress. Zero funding for Amtrak means a zero vote of confidence for the Amtrak Board until proven otherwise. After 31 years of employment with Amtrak, I still feel good about Amtrak and America's need for coast to coast passenger trains. I am very disappointed concerning the direction our Amtrak board of directors is taking Amtrak. How does this board tell 20,000 loyal Amtrak employees the Amtrak Board does not support them? How does this board tell 25 million customers splitting Amtrak into three companies will make it better? How can this board say abolishment of all long distance trains or any train is good for America? Amtrak's Board Seeks No Funding for Operations It is very clear that the Amtrak Board is in the back pocket of President Bush. As a group this Board is not the friend of Amtrak or the Amtrak workers.
