I support a great national debate on Amtrak's future!
Having a national railroad passenger system is part of our country's history and heritage. Giving up Amtrak and our national rail passenger system without a national debate would be ludicrous.  A great national debate on Amtrak and the future of our national rail network must take place in the year 2002.
I want to post your comments on this web site too concerning Amtrak and our national system.

Very Bad News! 11/9/01
The Amtrak Reform Council voted 6-5 to declare that Amtrak will not meet a congressional deadline of December 2,2002, for covering its operating costs without government help. Amtrak has 90 days to draw up a liquidation plan, and the council will use that time to plan a *restructuring of  passenger rail in America.

*The ruling does not mean any immediate changes in train service for  now. But let's face it, this year might be your last chance to travel on a real Amtrak long distance train with a dining car, lounge car, coach and sleeping cars.  Last call! to Save Amtrak and our  national passenger system as we know it.  There are no guarantees what succeeds Amtrak will be better and that worries me.

Amtrak  has been in business for over 30 years, having been established by an act of Congress.
Over this 30 year period there have been several times when the President or Congress of  the United States of America wanted to either shut Amtrak down or reduce it's funding to such a low level it would not be viable. 1979,1981-1982,1995-1996; were not good years for the company, customers, rail advocates, and  or employees. Trains were lost, and once they are gone they are gone forever.  Today we're at a point  where if we lose any more intercity  trains we will no longer have a national system.

Tuesday's September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York's World Trade Center using commercial air craft as bombs. Forever changed the American transportation system.  Over night Amtrak became an important means of moving people across the country. The issue of Amtrak survival is not assured.   Please  help  insure Amtrak survival by sending e-mail to elected and non elected government officials from this web site. America needs a travel choice in all states and markets.  We are a united nation.

Question?
How may I help to save Amtrak?
Answer.
By being a customer and or by contacting your elected government officials by e-mail, snail mail or phone.
Question?
What do I say?
Answer.
Suggest -Maintaining a strong viable national intercity rail system in the United States. Keeping Amtrak and the national system intact. You want Amtrak to stay in business and grow the business in all markets both long and short haul.  Money for more passenger trains, engines, sleepers, lounges diners, coaches. You do not want to see any long distance trains cut or employees lose their jobs.  Please include your name and home address in the e-mail or letter.
Again we are entering a very critical time. The Amtrak Reform Council asked Amtrak to invoked it's liquidation plan.  Customers, rail advocates, citizens and employees must again come forward to save Amtrak.  Your help is needed more then ever before we are counting on you to send an e-mail now to support our national rail passenger system. Save the train!

Rep. John Mica Florida

Anti-Amtrak!No National Rail System!  (In my opinion his plan will restrict your "freedom of choice of travel" which is anti- American. Rep. Mica plan will derail our National Rail System and Amtrak.) (FYI- Rep.Mica is Chairman of the aviation sub committee.)

Quotes are from Rep. John Mica web site:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman John L. Mica (R-FL), a senior member on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, introduced legislation that may force the liquidation or  restructuring of Amtrak.  The measure is entitled the "Systemic Passenger Infrastructure and Network Overhaul through Financial Freedom Act."

"Amtrak is on a glide-path to self-destruction, not self-sufficiency," Mica said.  In 1997 Congress passed a law requiring Amtrak to become self-financing by 2002.  Recently, the Amtrak Reform Council (ARC) reported to President Bush that not only would Amtrak fail to meet the statutory deadline, but that evidence demonstrates they have made no significant progress toward meeting the deadline.

"The Senate acted thoughtlessly by rescinding the requirement for a liquidation plan, but if Amtrak is unable to get its act together, Congress will move forward with a restructuring plan," the Congressman stated.  If restructuring is not completed, Mica's measure will reinstate the liquidation requirement of the 1997 law.

"Amtrak is losing massive amounts of money on its intercity rail operations, and there is no end in sight.  I agree with the assessment of United Transportation Union International President Byron Boyd, issued on November 14, that 'the Amtrak Reform Council has arrived at the front door with serious accountability issues.  While there can be debate over a number of the issues the ARC raises, there can be no debate over the mismanagement of Amtrak.'" Mica continued.  "Amtrak is not up to the task of creating a viable national rail passenger system."

"This bill transfers ownership of two profitable Amtrak corridors to the Department of Transportation and ultimately to the private sector and the states.  Amtrak's inability to manage or operate potentially profitable corridors makes it necessary to give the states and private sector an opportunity to compete for these corridors," Mica said.

Amtrak's FY2001 performance was worse than its performance in FY2000, and Amtrak is in a weaker financial position than when Congress passed the Amtrak Reform Act in an effort to give Amtrak the tools to become a more efficient provider of services.  Recently the ARC estimated that Amtrak will lose approximately $340 million for the purposes of operational self-sufficiency, which will result in a total loss of over $1 billion.

"While I participated in and supported the 1997 reforms instituted by Congress, Amtrak has failed to take advantage of the tools Congress gave them and has instead continued poor management and operational decisions.  It is time to be honest.  The next step for the Amtrak Reform Council will be to submit a restructuring plan, and we must begin to think about the options now.  I strongly support development of our high-speed rail corridors, but want to make sure these are developed by organizations capable of creating a world class system," Mica said.

Amtrak Reform Council:
Note: This is the group who is going to administer the poison pill to dismantle Amtrak and our national rail passenger system. Once they get the word from Congress.  They are the executioners counting down the final days. Congress set up the Amtrak Reform Council to do only one thing their dirty work!  It is Washington buck passing at it's finest. If there is going to be some "dirty work" shutting down the national rail passenger system, than Congress should do it themselves and be held accountable to the American people.

Send e-mails to elected government officials FIRST then to non elected officials.
One person can make a difference.  Your voice is not heard unless you send e-mails to your elected and non-elected government officials to save Amtrak.
I commend your team for standing up and showing integrity for saving rail passenger service in this country. We do need to get the word out that rail service is a vital transportation asset which has not received proper investment.
I have written to my senators reps and the non-popular vote winning administration already.  Last month I also had appointments with staff of all of my 3 reps in Congress.
The stories of reductions in frequencies on one hand don't make any sense if the express business is to be refocused on mail, high priority shipments and refrigerated cars.  Less than daily service will not bring in the contracts.
But since it doesn't make sense, Amtrak will carry it out (Mercer!!!!).
Never stop fighting!!!
