Ex-Missouri Pacific Diesel Units Still In Service
Compiled by Jay Glenewinkel

Below is a partial listing of former Missouri Pacific Power, that was on the property at the time of the UP-MP-WP merger in 1982. Originally, this section was just going to be only power that has been retired by the Union Pacific. However, I felt it proper to create the first ever, online roster with a complete number by number listing of the former MoPac Power in service anywhere in North America. I have included the renumberings of MP power on the Union Pacific System as of December 16, 2001, along with the units in service elsewhere.

At this time, this roster is not complete. Several hours of research is currently underway, and units as well as models will be added on a regular basis, until the complete roster of 3000 plus units is accounted for. This will include any power that was owned, leased or assigned to the Missouri Pacific, including the former Western Pacific and Rock Island GP40s. Any contributions of information and/or photographs is welcome. If any errors, or information is found to be incorrect, please contact us immediatley, and we will make the proper corrections.

Numerous resources include Union Pacific Railroad, Don Strack's Union Pacific Locomotive Directory 2000, Kevin Eudaly's MoPac Power, Diesel Era Magazine, CTC Board Magazine, and numerous private resources have been used in the preparation of this roster. For more detailed information of Missouri Pacific Power, I highly reccommend Kevin Eudaly's Missouri Pacific Power.

UPDATE:
From September 2001 to current date, UP has retired over 300 locomotives, and most of the Ex-MoPac SD40-2s and SD50s are gone with the exception of the rebuilt units to SD38s for yard duties. All of the ex-MP GEs are expected to be off the roster by May 2002. The legacy of the MOPac power on the UP will soon be a thing of the past.

Note: 12 of these units found their way into service on the Wisconsin Central when the WC began operations in 1987. However, many of them made a side trip to Farmrail in Oklahoma. They were really beaten and abused while there. All of these units were in very poor shape when they arrived on the WC and significant money had to put into them to get them to run properly. (Tuch Santucci)

AUNW GP35m #66 is former Texas & Pacific #600 - It was later renumbered to MP 2500, then to MP 2617. It has traveled around to several roads, since it was retired by the MoPac. It was sent to the Texas Mexican Railroad in Corpus Christi, Texas, but the road refused the unit. It later went to the Austin & Northwestern, where it was used in service for some time. From there it was placed in service on the Dallas Garland & Northern Railroad. The unit has since been taken out of service by Rail America. These Ex-Missouri Pacific GP38s temporarily operated in HELM lease service until they were acquired by the Grand Trunk Western for rebuilding to GP38-2s. A total of 64 GP38-2s were acquired by HELM (a HELM Financial and GTW partnership), these 12 are the only ones to appear to have the "HL" markings physically present.

Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 5725 - was built as MP 884, and later renumbered to MP 2035. The unit operated temporarily as a Helm Lease unit before going to GT for rebuilding to GT 5725. The unit was again renumbered to GT 4925 where it is in service today. The 5725 is seen in Portland, Oregon in 1992. - Steve Schuman Photo/ Jay Glenewinkel Collection

GT 5731 - Another former MoPac GP38 is in GT dress. This unit was built as MP 886 and renumbered to MP 2037. It also operated as a lease unit for a brief time, and then went to GT to become GT 5731, and later GT 4931. Here the GT 5731 is seen in Madison, Georgia in 1992. - DW Read Photo/ Jay Glenewinkel Collection

UP 1845 - a GP38-2 was built as MP 954. It was later renumbered to MP 2105, then UP 2105. It was sold to HATX and became HATX 215, then it was leased back to the UP and was delivered to the property as UP 1845. It is scheduled to be renumbered to UP 345. - Steve Rude Photo/ Jay Glenewinkel Collection

Alton & Southern GP38-2 #2000 - A&S 2000 was originally built 1/73 as MP 930, then renumbered as MP 2081 and finally as UP 2081 before going onto the A&S. The Alton & Southern was, and still is, a switching railroad in the St. Louis area once owned and operated by both MoPac and CN&W. After purchasing the road on May 9, 1968, the two roads painted the A&S engines with yellow hoods (after CN&W), blue cabs and frames (after MoPac), and a hybrid herald for the A&S on the cab. The A&S is still alive and well today, under the UP, and still uses the old hybrid paint scheme - Jay Glenewinkel Purchased Slide Collection

Note about SD40 rebuilds - Dynamic Brakes traditionally were not used on MoPac SD40s, but were added to some units by later owners. For example: MP 3010 to HELM Financial in May 25, 1993 as HLCX 3010.  Rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen in April 1996 to a "SD40-3" receiveing dynamic brakes, CLC microprocessor, HELM maroon and blue paint and became HLCX 6058.

WC/Oxford Notes
Five former Missouri Pacific SD40s and Nine former Union Pacific SD40s were sold by Union Pacific to WC/Oxford Leasing and leased to the "Wheeling & Lake Erie (W&LE) Railway in 1992.  Former MP (3000 series) units 4001, 4003, 4016, 4018 and 4025 and former vintage UP units 3016, 3034, 3046, 3048, 3049, 3067, 3068, 3073 and 3102 all received a fresh coat of MP "Jenks" Blue before being shipped to their new owner. In 1997, all fourteen (14) units were purchased by W&LE and then sold to CIT financial and then again leased back to the W&LE. In 1999 and 2000 these units were rebuilt and recieved a black and orange paint scheme, and received DRGW styled numbering and lettering. All 14 units are still in service today.

Additional SD40 Note
It is to be known that former Missouri Pacific SD40 number 3048 is in service on the New England Central Railroad. This information, nor has the new number been confirmed.
