Missouri Pacific Steam Rosters - Part 1

Sometimes we have focused so much attention on the diesels, that we forgot about the real locomotives that helped build the Missouri Pacific to begin with.

Here is information, a roster and material of Missouri Pacific Steam. Some information will be summaries, while those with rebuild dates will be listed individually.

To start, here is the information on the MP 4-8-4 Northerns, and the T&P 2-10-4 Texas Types.

Missouri Pacific 4-8-4 Northerns

The Missouri Pacific Railroad converted all 25 of its 2-8-4 Berkshires into 4-8-4 Northerns in the early 1940s. The rebuilt locomotives (road numbers 2101 through 2125) were given 75" drivers, greater boiler capacity, a cast steel engine bed and roller bearings on all axles. They had 28 x 30 cylinders, a boiler pressure of 250 psi, a total weight of 449,950 lbs and a tractive effort of 66,640 pounds. In 1943, 15 more Northerns (road numbers 2201 through 2215) were delivered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works. These locomotives were duplicates of the 1938 D&RGW 4-8-4s and had 73" drivers, 26 x 30 cylinders, a boiler pressure of 285 psi, a weight of 496,000 lbs and a tractive effort of 67,200 pounds. There are no survivors.

Texas & Pacific Texas Type Locomotives

The Texas & Pacific Railroad received the very first purposely designed 2-10-4 built in North America. These locomotives were delivered in 1925 as part of an order for ten Class I-1 locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works. The first locomotive, road number 600 and the nine others (road numbers 601 through 609) had 29" dia x 30" stroke cylinders, 63.5 dia. drivers, a 250 psi boiler pressure, a tractive effort of 83,000 lbs and each weighed 448,000 pounds.

As was the custom, the first railroad to receive a new wheel arrangement was given the honor of giving it a name and Texas & Pacific selected the name "Texas" for the 2-10-4s. Fifteen more "Texas" type locomotives were delivered from Lima in 1927. These Class I-1a 2-10-4s (road numbers 610 through 624) were duplicates of the first ten except the boiler pressure was raised to 255 psi which increased the tractive effort to 84,600 pounds.

In 1928, thirty more were delivered: fifteen Class I-1b (road numbers 625 through 639) and fifteen Class I-1c (road numbers 640 through 654). All thirty were built by Lima and were very similar to the 1927 group except the weight of each was 452,000 pounds. A final 15 Class I-1d (road numbers 655 through 669) "Texas" type locomotives arrived in 1929 to complete T&P's roster of 70. These last locomotives, built by Lima, were very close copies of the previous class except each weighed 457,000 pounds. The only surviving T&P "Texas Type" locomotive, number 610  is owned by the Texas State Railroad and is on Static display in Palestine, TX. Number 610 was restored to operating condition and it pulled the American Freedom Train throughout the southwest during the 1976 bicentennial celebration
