Missouri Pacific System Timetables 1969-1985
by JD "Tuch" Santucci - former MPRR Engineer
additional content by Jay Glenewinkel - former MPRR/UPRR Crew Van Driver

In 1969 the Missouri Pacific Railroad Eliminated the use of individual Divisional Timetables, and created a system wide timetable. The first two (2) issues (No. 1 in 1969 and No.2 in 1971) were rather generic versions, but created a new way of operating procedures. This method also helped reduce some costs of printing of numerous various timetables in the over 20 different divisions and subdivisions on the system.

The system timetable provided the crew members and officials alike with more in depth information about the different subdivisions, including sidings, business tracks and more. In addition, Passenger Train schedules were provided where applicable, as well other important items pertaining to a specific business track, changes or additions to service tracks and more.

In the back of these timetables, is a section "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS". This provided the official instructions for general operations over the entire system, as well as on specific foreign railroads. Among these instructions included speed restrictions on specific locomotives in certain subdivisions and branch lines, the various road signs used along the right of way, block signal indications, etc.

As the Missouri Pacific made improvements and changes, so did the timetables change. Anytime there was a change in a District, the addition of a Branch Line or Business Track, new locomotives, new Hot Box detectors, and the list goes on and on and on, a new timetable was issued. In 1977, three different System timetables were issued. This was partly due to the integration and elimination of the Texas & Pacific, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, The Missouri-Illinois and other affiliated railroads into the Missouri Pacific System.

Below is a brief run down on each system timetable used on the Missouri Pacific.

More on Missouri Pacific Lines Employee Timetables
by JD "Tuch" Santucci - former MPRR Engineer

There were three joint timetables issued for the joint track between Chicago and Woodland Jct, IL on the Chicago Subdivision. #1 was a joint C&EI/L&N issued in MoPac format with orange cover and the C&EI buzzsaw emblem. The L&N name was in a rectangular box with a border around it as the emblem appeared on the front of L&N locomotives. It was issued 10/26/69. It was a tri-fold type with no paper pages. There was no color coding for ABS and CTC in the joint issued. The entire card was an orange colored coated cardstock material like the covers of the system timetables. All instructions contained were applicable to the Chicago Sub only and all employees affected had to have a current copy with them.

I believe system timetable #13 discontinued the use of it and all instructions were carried on the system issue. If I recall correctly, virtually all instructions in the joint timetables were also in the Chicago and Illinois Sub section of the system timetable. The only item not shown in the special instructions of the system issue were the locations and type of hand operated crossover switches. With this change, L&N crews now had to carry the slightly larger MoPac system issue instead of the smaller joint timetable.

L&N gained joint ownership of the double track line between Woodland Jct and Yard Center in 1969 with MoPac handling the operation (dispatching, staffing at stations and towers requiring such), performing the maintenance and handling all local industry work. L&N was billed for services based upon car counts. Local switching charges were billed to L&N. L&N also inherited the remaining passenger train left on the line, the Danville Flyer. This was a daily Chicago-Danville train. It normally had one engine, and two coaches with hardly any people traffic.

Joint Chicago #2 was also a C&EI/L&N issue on 4/15/73 again, with the C&EI buzzsaw.

Joint MoPac/L&N #3 was issued 10/31/76. It had the screaming eagle replacing the C&EI buzzsaw as the C&EI had now been totally merged into MoPac and the name discontinued. This was also the last joint timetable issued for the Chicago Division.

There was one C&EI Evansville Division timetable issued before MoPac conveyed the line to the L&N in 1969. It had a blue cover with the C&EI buzzsaw. issued June 2, 1968. This covered what MoPac named the Evansville Sub (between Woodland Jct and Evansville, IN) and several branch lines still in operation on that date on the Evansville side. Prior to the this change, the line between Chicago and Danville, IL was called the Danville Sub and where the track split at Woodland Jct and headed towards Salem and St Louis was called the St Louis Sub. From Danville to Evansville was called the Evansville Sub in pre-merger C&EI days.

Beginning in January 1983, it seemed that many forms (and other printed materials) began to carry the UP shield. As the cases of MoPac forms were depleted from inventories, they were replaced with those of UP. Even system timetable #23 had the Screaming Eagle replaced with the UP shield on the cover though the written name of the railroad on the timetable still said "Missouri Pacific Railroad."
