In 1993, Burlington Northern, seeking a gateway into Mexico to
compete with UP, SP, and ATSF for international traffic, reached an
agreement with South Orient to route cars over the line and into
Mexico via the Presidio gateway. BN began advertising this
joint venture with South Orient as its El Vaquero route to
Mexico. In November 1993, the two railroads operated an
inspection train, hosting railroad officials, journalists, and
civic dignitaries over the length of the line. The train is shown here
departing the west Texas town of Fort Stockton on November 5,
1993.
