Walking another half-mile west we encounter the 9:00 a.m. train returning to Canon City at the mouth of the Gorge.
TT3204
From the same spot, the train exits the Royal Gorge and swings along the Arkansas River towards Canon City.
TT3205
The 12:00 noon train is in the narrowest part of the Royal Gorge as it snakes its way along the Arkansas River. The supports for the hanging bridge are in the foreground, still proclaiming "Rio Grande."
TT3206
The train rumbles across the hanging bridge, built to carry the tracks across a place where no rock ledge could be blasted from the canyon walls. This shot requires paying a $12.50 admission fee to enter the park. On this day, it was unknown if the bridge would be in sunlight or not, but after an anxious ride down the incline railway to the bottom, the $12.50 gamble paid off.
