Photo - 1959 Tube Stock interior
The interior of a 1959 Tube
Stock driving motor car looking towards the trailing end guard's door control panels, as
running on the Northern Line in the mid 1990s. The interior is much the same as the
original, except that electric passenger alarm equipment has been fitted along the left
hand side of the upper ceiling.
The fluorescent lighting tubes mounted along the centre of
the ceiling were exposed and easy to change. They were probably the best lighting
system LU ever had. The lighting effect was consistently bright, as opposed to the
new covered lighting systems so beloved of modern designers. The covers collect dirt
and condensation and are time-consuming to remove. Unless regularly cleaned inside,
the lighting levels soon become reduced.
