During peak traffic times, such as a special outing or a baseball game, most interurban lines did not have sufficient electrical capacity to handle the trains. These portable substation cars, such as this one purchased from the Northern Indiana Railway, were placed in strategic locations to supply an additional power boost. The car is waiting to be pulled to a remote location the anticipated heavy traffic this weekend- the Ware- Palmer football game always draws a huge crowd. This car is a gift from Chick Curtis and took a first place award at a Pacific Coast Regional NMRA Convention. Courtesy Wm K Walthers
