DRGW Time Lines


The following are the dates of the various names the Rio Grande used in the state of Utah. I would like to thank Jim Eager for the early dates. Also I would like to thank Damian Lydick and Galen Coupe for the later dates.


21 July 1881
Denver & Rio Grande Western-Utah, formed.

16 May 1889
To Rio Grande Western.

1 July 1901
Denver & Rio Grande takes control of
Rio Grande Western. Both roads operate
as one company.

31 July 1908
Rio Grande Western and Denver & Rio Grande
merged as Denver & Rio Grande RR Co (Consolidated).

1 August 1921
To Denver & Rio Grande Western RR.

13 October 1988
Rio Grande Industries, owner of the Denver and Rio Grande Western, completed its purchase of Southern Pacific Transportation Company.

~ January 1992
D&RGW offices start answering phone Southern Pacific.

Late May 1992
DRGW 3086 repainted into SP Speed Lettering.
To quote a phrase used in CTC Board at that time. "Stick a fork in it, it's done".

11 September 1996
UP take over of SPT Co.

1 February 1998
