The Salt Lake City Southern came into being in April, 1993. It was created when Union Pacific sold to the Utah Transit Authority a portion of its track stretching from the Utah/Salt Lake County line, UP mile post 775.74, to 900 South mile post 798.74 at 900 South Street in downtown Salt Lake City. It also includes the 1.25 mile Loverdahl Spur, connecting at mile post 790.52. Union Pacific, however, retained rights to haul freight over the track and subsequently sold those rights to Railtex.

The Salt Lake City Southern interchanges with UP and provides terminal and intra-plant switching for approximately fifty customers ranging from downtown Salt Lake City to Draper in the south. The active line ends at the IFA plant in Draper.

In October, 1999 RailTex completed the sale of the Salt Lake City Southern to the Utah Railway Company, the Martin based rail carrier, which throughout most of its 86-year history has concentrated on hauling coal between Martin and Provo.
