ROAD TRIP
DAY 3
Another 0500 wakeup call. I was ready this time. Do the gas, ice and coffee thing and pick up David. Do a fast check of Helper and Wildcat then off to CV Spur. All dead. Time for B&G and more coffee. Get back to Helper just in time for the T-2's to wake up and go to work.
A few minutes later the scanner goes off. Must be the #6 coming into the yard. About time there was some action around here. All we need now is something to chase up the hill on the way home. Have to be in SLC at 1300.
#6 heads out of Helper east bound and hits the detector at mile post 624.3. Watch the T-2's make up the Dirt Train for a few minutes and the detector goes off again. Hmmmm. Must be the early morning BNSF "M" heading into the yard. Yup, here she comes. Now we have something to chase up the hill.
Time to head up the hill for the action. Decide to head all the way to Kyune for a setup. No light in the canyon yet. About that time we catch a Utah coal empty heading into Martin. This is the first Utah train all weekend. Stop off at the west end of Kyune Tunnels and setup. Get lucky with the light.
Hop back in the Train Chaser, select WOT on the secondaries and hope there are no UHP's in the area. Decide to drop under the bridge where US 6 passes over the tracks just east of Colton so David can get a video.
Time to head on up the hill. Colton has bad light for most photos in the morning. Stop at the summit so David can get some shots then head for Gilully to setup. The scanner comes to life. What do we have here? It's a Skyline coal train getting a Warrant at Colton to head west. Decide to catch both trains here at Gilully. Has been a great day so far. Kind of makes up for a slow weekend.
Head on down the hill stopping along the way for photo shoots. I get a few but all are bad. Stop in at the Thistle roadside stop and get the going home picture. Even though it was real slow at times, got some good shots and had fun. That's what it is all about.
