Empire Builder


Welcome aboard. You are traveling on board the Empire Builder, an Amtrak Superliner Train, that takes you between Seattle or Portland and Chicago by way of the Great Northern Plains. While on board, you will be experiencing the utmost comfort and service in train travel along with many of the same vistas first viewed by the early settlers.

ON THE EMPIRE BUILDER WATCH FOR: The Chicago skyline fading from view...the beautiful sandstone formations of the Wisconsin Dells...tracing the Mississippi River north to Minneapolis-St. Paul...the strange shapes of Devil's Lake...Fort Budord, a 19th century U.S. Cavalry Fort in North Dakota...Montana's Bear Paw Mountains...Marias Pass through the Rockies. To Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood, Bonneville Dam and Beacon Rock. To Seattle, Icicle Canyon, the passage through the Cascade Mountains, Skykomish and Puget Sound.

The Empire Builder operates daily between Seattle/Portland-Spokane-Whitefish-St.Paul/Minneapolis-Chicago. Superliner Equipment is used on this train, with usually 2 sleeping cars (1 Seattle Section, 1 Portland Section), a dining car (Seattle Section), a lounge car (Portland Section), 2 coach-handicapped car (1 each section), a smoking-coach car (Seattle Section), a coach-cafe car (Seattle Section), a coach-baggage car (Portland Section), and a transition-crew sleeper (Seattle Section) as it's regular consist between Seattle/Portland and Chicago. Both the Seattle and Portland sections are combined in Spokane.

IMPORTANT NOTES: There is no Sightseer Lounge Car between Seattle and Spokane, and thus no movies are shown and hospitality hour does not exist between these points. Also, there is no Dining Car between Portland and Spokane. Sleeping Car passengers will be provided with cold meal service.
