WSDOT Freight Rail Preservation Report to the State Transportation Commission

Coming up with the needed freight rail capacity for moving crops and products through, out of and into Washington will be one of the State's biggest transportation challenges ahead, noted Jim Slakey (Director of WSDOT's Public Transportation and Rail Division or PT&R), whose report was based on a new blueprint that outlines what PT&R plans to do in the next 20 years to help move people and freight in Washington State.

There are several categories of rail lines used for moving freight: the major lines, light-density line and branch lines connected to the light-density systems.

Top items in PT&R's 20 year plan will be the light-density and branch lines, and preserving essential rail corridors for future service. Through its Essential Rail Assistance Program, WSDOT will invest in:

The department also will be identifying those rail corridors which are essential to the state's future freight capacity and will purchase right of way, as well as give financial support to local jurisdictions trying to keep those essential lines available.
