Washington Association of Rail Passengers

Resolution 98-__

April 11th , Nineteen Hundred and Ninety Eight

Support for an Amtrak stop in Tukwila

WHEREAS intercity rail travel is increasingly becoming a popular, cost-effective, and environmentally freindly mode of travel as demonstrated by a doubling of ridership in the northwest corridor in recent years, and

WHEREAS Amtrak has determined that Tukwila/Renton is the preferred location for a new station serving over one half million people in the South King County area, and

WHEREAS the Regional Transit Authority will be constructing a new rail station in Tukwila/Renton, with associated express bus service at the Longacres site by the end of 1999 and

WHEREAS the State of Washington will be providing for increased levels of service in the northwest corridor with the addition of new, state of the art, high-speed passenger trains beginning late this year,

BE IT RESOLVED that the Washington Association of Rail Passengers work toward supporting the implementation of Amtrak services in a new Intermodal Rail Station located in Tukwila/Renton at the Longacres site, with shuttle bus service to SeaTac Airport. We stand prepared to support volunteer ambassidors and part-time station agents as needed to "jump-start" this endeavor. It is our hope that all government bodies work jointly and cooperativly to make the Amtrak, RTA "Sounder"and Express Bus service a reality by the end of next year.
