Opal

Get Map       TopoZone Home

Opal is located in Lincoln County, mile post 24.0 on the UP Pocatello Sub.

Opal is another of Wyoming's early railroad centers for cattle and sheep ranchers and is said to be among the wealthiest in the state. Resting some 7,400 feet above sea level, the town is more representative of a typical western cattle town than a ghost town as it ships more than 10,000 cattle each year to mid-west and eastern cities along with about the same number of sheep and 250,000 pounds of wool. The town's name implies another of its assets. Opal is rich in minerals and precious stones. They are considered common property and can be had for the picking.
