Here are a few notes from Justin Babcock, a mechanic on the NBEC. The RS18u locomotives were intended to provide power for the early years of the railway, to be replaced in the future. Since then, the RS18s have proven themselves as good for switching duties and hold a pretty good reputation. Since Northern New Brunswick has been MLW country for years, these units are no stranger to the area. NBEC is putting money to keep the units running for a few years. About 10 units have had their main generator blow and were sent to Montreal for repairs. Some units have received governor upgrades, and some are having pollutant taks installed to collect oil/fuel leaks. The only painted unit in NBEC colors is 1857, but more units are to be painted.

The C424s have an unknown future. They are mostly used as spares with the SD40s, and will probably be the first units to leave.
