HISTORICAL AND PRESENT RAILROADS

We hope to have some history on each of the lines that served Fayetteville and the surrounding community.  We hope this will inform everyone the importance of the railroad to our home.

The Story of Fayetteville and the Upper Cape Fear.

By John Oates

In 1828, there was talk about a railroad from Fayetteville, to the middle, and western portions of North Carolina. Fayetteville had one of the first railroads in the U.S. In 1828, a road was constructed from Bridge street, & Person street, to the Market House as a model for what a railroad could do. Interesting point, the rails were made of wood, as of course the ties. The experiment was not a success, though. Portions of these tracks were still intact around 908 Russell Street, as late as the 1950’s.
