George: The Bachmann Ten Wheeler is actually a close model of the
ET&WNC 4-6-0 and the engines were also used on the White pass in
WW2. Model Railroader ran an article on the ET&WNC almost 20 years
ago but I have that issue and would be glad to sendyou a copy. The new
10th Anniversary Ten Wheeler is certainly a super model of the
ET&WNC loco, as you'll see. The Bachmann bobber caboose and box car
are also authentic and, I've found, the 8 wheel caboose and hopper are
modelled after EBT cars. I have info on these also if you'd care to see
it. E-mail me your address and I'll pop this in the mail. By the way,

George, I'm a little lazy today figured this was easier than
finding your email addy on your site This a.m. used the RBRR
(AC)CNsnowplow (w/8#s of steel) pushed by our GNHM SD-45 to succesfully
clear 7-10cm in depth of wet snow from the mainline tracks. Also shot
off about 20 pics which i hope to show (a few of) on FSOL. ANYWAYS,
checked your snowplow pages but did not spot any mention of upgrading
its light with LED and possibly a switch to turn it off when its'
sitting in a yard. The on/off switch (even being a electrical novice) I
could likely figure but its the LED that I need tutoring on ! I have
purchased LEDs' (thru Clays' source) to still hopefully use to upgrade
44T and GP but one or two I can spare for this .... thanks for your

George, I really enjoyed reading your web pages. There's a lot of
information that you share this way. It was also pleasantly surprising
that you use a Mac to produce all these pages. Good info about how to
produce them too. I have a collection of G-scale stuff too and plan to
make a layout in the garden as well. Your web pages gave me some good
hints on how to tackle that. I model a US western style railroad by the
name of Xanton & Western Union Railroad. Professionally I work as a
Macintosh support engineer for Hewlett-Packard. What do you do
professionally if I may ask? I can't recall having read that on one of
your pages (the ones I have seen at least, which is perhaps merely half
of the many pages you posted.) Anyway, good luck with your railroad and

While I generally like my SD-45, on my layout which is NOT flat it
could sure use some traction tires. I tend to build my trains on a big
downhill loop and I have found that with a 16-car freight (most cars
have metal wheels), it comes off the loop just time but then shortly
thereafter it is sitting there grinding away to try to pull the train.
I have had to add a helper engine with traction tires, usually a USA
GP-38-2, at which point the train rolls along very nicely. I've thought
about getting an additional SD-45, but I already had the other
loco. |

I liked your article on using the X10 system. I too used this
system. I placed the camera in a Bachman box car w/ a cut out. Used
velcro to fasten it and a really big lead acid battery in the box car.
The A/C critter pushed it up 5% grades and the video looked OK. No
sound. The closest system I found in R/R ads was 250.00. Works OK for
80.00. Range was close to 70'. Some drop outs when TX antenna was at 90
deg. to RX antenna. |

FYI: Found out the new Aristo SD45 will run on 5 foot diameter
curves after all. While most of my outdoor layout is 20 ' 10' and 8'
curves, I do have two 5' curves I needed to clear yard objects. My
dealer was good enough to let me try a SD45 before buying, and sure
enough, that big boy has no problem on the 5', all by itself. The
problem begins when rolling stock is coupled directly behind the SD,
and it lifts the car right off the track. Much added weight to the car
will help much of the time, but a coupler issue on the SD needs to be
worked out yet. In the meantime, I couple a UB25 right behind the SD,
and NO problems, due to it's weight and body mounted coupler.

George, I've been in touch with Aristo re their onboard units
shorting out and not getting a response with my Trainmaster for the
bell or whistle. I originally bought three of the 5490s and 5495s and
still have one unopened, but have been told by Aristo to return them.
I've since found out I have a short in my receiver that shows up even
when power is off. Would you advise I send the receiver and the three
onboard units back for replacement or is there someone in my area that
can check them out? Also, has Hillside gone out of business? Is there
someone else that makes a simular Shay pickup conversion? Good meeting
you at the Big Train Show, keep up your outstanding work. |

George, your site is great. However you are a bit mistaken in the
origins of the Bachmann Ten Wheeler. It is a fairly close 22.5:1 model
of the East Tennessee and West North carolina 4-6-0. One or two of
these engines were commandeered in WW2 and sent to the Yukon to run on
the Alaska and White Pass RR. Model Railroader mag ran an article on
the ET&WNC quite a few years ago complete with scale drawings. The
Bachmann 4-6-0, bobber caboose, box car and gondola are all very close
to scale models, including the unusual left opening doors on the box

SMOKE FLUID FROM 2 LOCAL STORES. 1 WAS PINE SCENT AND THE OTHER WAS OLD
AND NO SCENT. I PUT THE DEPT 56, OF EACH TYPE IN 2 OF MY BEST
SMOKERS(LBG SMOKE UNITS) AND THEY DID NOT SMOKE. THE LOCO THAT I USED
THE NON SCENTED FLUID IN ALSO MELTED THE PLASTIC SMOKE STACK. IT ALSO
KILLED THE SMOKE UNITS IN BOTH. AFTER I PUT THE NORMAL SMOKE FLUID BACK
IN, THEY BARELY SMOKE. I WASHED THE SMOKE UNITS OUT WITH ALCOHOL AND
THEN LET THEM RUN DRY. STILL BARELY SMOKE. THE ELEMENTS ARE HOT BUT

run hot. The gearbox/motor between the drivers is very hot to the touch
after 10 or more minutes of running. Is this typical of these locos? I
use conventional power, not Aristo PWC. Is this a factor? I'd like to

I have modified one of my Big Haulers per your suggestions on LGB
brushes and the transistor steam switch. I am quite pleased with the
resulting operation. I found a stycast 3/4 round channel that perfectly
holds the LGB brushes when fitted between the motor frame sides. I also
used stycast tube slices for the driver shims. The rest of my engines

i found your experiences of traveling on the uk rail network most
interesting. I found that your description of the uk rail logistic
network to be wrong. royal mail run there own independent trains and
they are not attached to passenger trains some fright trains run with
up to 50 wagons (cars). the food is expensive I agree but I have tasted
worse us food |

Wonderful site. I found alot of good information. I just have one
more question regarding the Arist TE. I currently have an MRC Control
Master 20 which is enough power for the one train I want to run and
Aristo says I can use it with the TE. Since I like to simply put the
train out and let it run, the pulse setting was very interesting.
However, at LGB.COM they say that some power supplies "produce a spike
or pulse waveform, that can damage LGB motors and electronics." The
train I will be running is an LGB Colorado & Southern Mogul with
electronic sound. I would like to set the receiver to "Pulse" mode in
order to keep the motors cooler but not if it is going to damage the
mogul. Is there any truth to this or is LGB simply trying to get folks
to buy there power supplies. Please help. |

Mr. Schreyer: I am new to gauge, old to hobby. How do I know what
Aristo-Craft I am buying as far as production runs go? Everyone says
that the units get better with each run so the later runs are the best.
However how do I know what is what? I know that the Yellow boxes are
the latest packaging so those units are best, but what about the runs
in the blue and black boxes? My layout is being constructed indoors and
is shelf, so the trains have good trackage, grades, and a pretty long
running lap with 10' and 20'curves (ie long trains). Will the older
runs blue and black give me satisfactory performance? Please let me
know your opinion. I have done my research, but may have made a "new to
hobby" mistake. I found 6 blue box and 1 black box FB's, all new, at an
obscure hobby shop. The price was low that I bought them all. Will they
run reliably or should I kitbash the longest PB anyone has ever seen?

I have an older RS3 I’m trying to convert to battery. Trying
to detach the 2 hoods and cab has been a terrible experience. The
majority of the screws seem to have been overtorqued and the metal is
so soft that the Philips heads deform. Can you tell me what screws need
to be taken out in order to get to the interior of the unit? All of the
smaller screws are out but the hoods and cab will not release since
they seem to catch on the guts inside. There are stainless screws on
the centerline under the trucks Do they also need to be removed and if
so how? (since I don’t see any way of releasing the trucks). Any
advice would be appreciated |

unit installed or came with an "O" scale loco, maybe a Lionel 4-6-2,

A quick tip for your voltage regulated LED driver on
http://www.trainweb.us/girr/tips/tips7/white_led_tips.html If you
insert a diode in series with the output voltage, the natural voltage
drop of the diode will lower the output voltage by about 0.6v. Put the
diode on the ground leg of your voltage regulator, it will increase the
output by the same amount. Use as many diodes as you like to get the
required voltage. Or, there are common, cheap adjustable regulator
chips you might look into. Good luck! |

I like US-Diesels, such as GP 9. I will also change change the
wheels. Thank you for the Tip. I replaced the wheels with rubber-tires.
I used original USA-Trains - Wheel-sets, but i think, your way is
better! I think, G-Scale Engines dont need rubber-tires! I also removed
the rail-sliders. The GP 9 drives good. In the last Days i get the
2-nd. Geep (Blk. Widow, i like SP!) and i will use wheel-sets from
