HEAD, TAIL AND SIDE LAMPS.

Distinctive head lamps, discs, &c.

119. Each engine, or leading engine when two or more engines are coupled together, and each rail motor, motor train, or electric train, must carry the prescribed head lamps, discs, or indicators, and destination boards where provided. The head lamps and indicators must be alight after sunset and during fog or falling snow, and where otherwise provided.

Tail lamp to indicate last vehicle.

120. (a) Each train when on any running line must always have a tail lamp, properly cleaned and trimmed, attached to the rear of the last vehicle, and this lamp will furnish evidence to the Signalman and others that the train is complete. After sunset, or during fog or falling snow, or when the block apparatus has failed in a section where there is a tunnel, or where otherwise provided, the tail lamp must be alight and show a red light, in addition to which two red side lights must be carried.

Guard to see that tail and side lamps are burning.

(b) The Guard, if there be only one, or rear Guard if there be more than one, must see that the tail lamps, and side lamps where provided, are kept properly burning when necessary.

Head, side and tail lamps-- parallel lines.

121. Where trains travel in the same direction on parallel lines, special regulations for head, side and tail lamps will be issued as necessary.

Engine tail lamp.

122. (a) An engine without a train must, when on any running line, always carry a tail lamp in the rear.

(b) When two or more engines are run coupled together without a train, the last engine only must have a tail lamp attached.

(c) An engine or engines drawing a train must not carry any lamp in the rear.

(d) An engine assisting a train in the rear must have a tail lamp attached; when more than one engine assists, the tail lamp must be carried on the rear-most engine only.

Shunting engines.

123. Engines employed exclusively in shunting at station yards and sidings must, after sunset or during fog or falling snow, carry head and tail lamps both showing a red light or such other light as may be prescribed.

Special trains run without notice.

124. (a) An additional tail lamp or a red board or a red flag by day, or an additional red tail light by night, carried on the last vehicle of a train or on an engine, indicates that a special train is to follow, of which previous printed or written notice has not been given. Signalmen and others concerned must keep a look out for such indication.

(b) The Station Master at the starting point of any such special train must, when practicable, take care that the additional tail signal is affixed on the last vehicle of the preceding train, and the Guard must see that the additional tail signal is removed when no longer required.

Slip carriage indications.

125. (a) When slip carriages are run on a train the indications must be as follow :--

On the rear of the slip portion when there is only one such portion.
On the rear of the last portion to be slipped when there is more than one slip portion.
