Tool Cars were usually nothing more than obsolete boxcars, sometimes left in original paint with only the car's number being changed with a simple swipe of a brush.
C&EI X 15 - this tool car is parked at Salem, IL in April 1983. It also clings to its "Coal Road" heritage. Considering the C&EI completely vanished in 1976, it is surprising to see how clean and crisp the paint and lettering are. - © JD Santucci Photo

MP X 297 - This tool car's original reporting number has been shortened to three digits. The ex-box car is coupled to MP 992 and an old-timer U.P. caboose. Falls City, 5/3/97 - Todd Greuter photo
MP X 297 - sleeps away in Falls City near the once busy train station. From the car's design, it's similar to the colorful merchandise cars in the 40's-50's. Still wearing the "Route of the Eagles" slogan , it enjoyed a second life - being recycled for M.o.W. duty. 5/3/97 - Todd Greuter photo

MP 15215? - Tool car; the photo is a bit fuzzy, but shows that this car also has a doorway installed between the sliding door and window. The car still has grabs reaching to the roof; Boone, Iowa; 9/8/01 - Todd Greuter photo

From this blow-up it seems one MoPac tool car has spent some time in Nebraska - football mascot Herbie Husker adorns its white door. Another mascot, the Arkansas Razorbacks hog is more often seen on MP equipment. The unidentified MP car is part of a work train resting in Union Pacific's Ogalala, Nebraska yard. September 3, 1995 - Todd Greuter photo ·

MP 2?253 - nother blow-up shows this 50' single door box has been renumbered for MoW service and stenciled "tool car." The car is part of a work train at Ogalala, Nebraska. September 3, 1995 - Todd Greuter photo ·
