Located near the northwest corner of downtown Dallas, near what is now the historic " West End Marketplace",
was MKT's Dallas Yard. After Union Pacific acquired the Katy in 1988, the yard remained in operation
for a few years before being
downsized, and finally, closed altogether.

Blast from the Past: Katy and the Mop in Dallas
When I started college in Dallas in August of 1990, the former Katy yard was a fairly busy place. Various locals were based here, and
at any given time, several locomotives (almost exclusively 4-axle units) would be on hand. At that time, Dallas seemed to be sort of a last
bastion for UP's un-repainted Katy locomotives, resplendent in "John Deere" green and yellow, or whatever coat of paint they were
wearing when the Katy acquired them secondhand. Almost as interesting were the blue-and-white Mo-Pac units which often worked in
the downtown area. Battling gridlocked traffic on Central Expressway (remember, this was before the
decade-long reconstruction project of the infamous freeway had even gotten started!) wasn't the easiest or most enjoyable
task in the world, but whenever I could, I made the drive downtown to see what was on hand.
As I write this in early 2002, very few remnants of the old Katy yard are visible today. The recently constructed American Airlines
Center (the new home of the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars) occupies the northern portion of what was once Katy's Dallas Yard.
