ROAD TRIP
DAY 3
Day 3, Sunday, 12/16/00
Finally got up around 0630. Very little sleep last night. Not breathing very well as I forgot some of my medication in the rush to leave home. Got ahold of Paul and Todd and told them I was heading over the hill for home. There was also bad weather coming in. Arrggggg. Finally got packed and checked out. This was not going to be a good day. Speaking of forgetting stuff. In the knapsack I left behind was also all my film, read 1.44 disks. Had to go to K-Mart Friday to pick up a 10 pack. Only have about a hundred at home. To top that off, 1/2 of them were not formatted properly so had to trade Paul for some good ones. At least yesterday make up for all the other shortfalls.Time to get back to the work at hand. Dropped by and picked up some coffee on wheels and headed to Helper. About that time, heard #6 on the scanner. Select secondarys and make it to the yard in time.
While shooting #6, a westbound BNSF "M" came rolling through the yard. Well, something to chase up and over the hill. Ran into the War Wagon at Nolan and found out from Paul that Tom Holly was the conductor. Time to get some pictures.
Confer with Paul on the plan of attack and we decide to head over the hill to Gilluly. Try to get some long shots of Tom on the upper loop. They did not turn out well as it was snowing too hard. Did get some fair ones at the bottom of the loops.
As you can see from the last two pictures, the snow is coming down hard. Time to head on down the hill and set up at Detour. Hmmm, what do we have here. Through the snow it looks like a eastbound BNSF. Looks like we are going to have a meet with Tom.
The snow is really coming down hard now and the wind is blowing. As you can see between the last two pictures, we are headed for a white out. Two miles down the road there is about four inches on the road and top speed is fifteen MPH. As I start up the grade to Thistle you can barely see out. There are people in their new 4X4's going sideways everywhere. I just hope no one stops in front of me. Will never get going again. Finally make it to the top of the grade and start down the hill to Spanish Fork. The old two wheel drive train chaser P/U only slipped twice on me. Still snowing, but not as hard as before. Make it on home in one piece. Talked to Paul later and he said they ran into the same thing returning to Helper. Overall, a VERY good road trip.
