Diesels run on diesel fuel. they replaced steam trains in the 1950's and 1960' s in Australia. they proved more efficient then steam trains because they went for longer periods without the needs for servicing and refiling with coal and water which took a long time.

Diesel electrics are a special trains with the diesel engine driving an electric generator which drives electric motors on each of the locomotives axels.

This is a picture of a Victorian T class Diesel Electric at the Mornington Railway Presavation Society's Depot at Moorooduc.
