Note:
12 of these units found their way into service on the Wisconsin Central
when the WC began operations in 1987. However, many of them made a side
trip to Farmrail in Oklahoma. They were really beaten and abused while
there. All of these units were in very poor shape when they arrived on
the WC and significant money had to put into them to get them to run properly.

AUNW GP35m #66 is former Texas & Pacific #600 - It was
later renumbered to MP 2500, then to MP 2617. It has traveled around
to several roads, since it was retired by the MoPac. It was sent
to the Texas Mexican Railroad in Corpus Christi, Texas, but the
road refused the unit. It later went to the Austin & Northwestern,
where it was used in service for some time. From there it was placed
in service on the Dallas Garland & Northern Railroad. The unit
has since been taken out of service by Rail America. AUNW #66 is
seen in Austin, Texas in the early 90s. - Steve Rude Photo/Jay

The ex-MoPac GP35m's were a sorry bunch. I had
operated these units in my MoPac days and they weren't bad. However,
they were in very poor mechanical shape when they hit the WC. Several
of them were barely running. Even the paint job applied to them as
part of the purchase price was poor. It was a water-based paint that
began to wash off almost immediately. These units tended to soup up
(pool oil) badly when idling for prolonged periods and then throw
the oil all over the place when throttling up. When the oil was washed
off using a Hotsy high-pressure sprayer, the paint began to come off
with the oil. The primer and then Jenks blue from their MoPac days
became readily visible. (Tuch Santucci) |

These Ex-Missouri Pacific GP38s temporarily operated
in HELM lease service until they were acquired by the Grand Trunk Western
for rebuilding to GP38-2s. A total of 64 GP38-2s were acquired by HELM
(a HELM Financial and GTW partnership), these 12 are the only ones to
appear to have the "HL" markings physically present.

Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 5725 - was built as MP 884, and
later renumbered to MP 2035. The unit operated temporarily as a
Helm Lease unit before going to GT for rebuilding to GT 5725. The
unit was again renumbered to GT 4925 where it is in service today.

GT 5731 - Another former MoPac GP38 is in GT dress. This
unit was built as MP 886 and renumbered to MP 2037. It also operated
as a lease unit for a brief time, and then went to GT to become
GT 5731, and later GT 4931. Here the GT 5731 is seen in Madison,
Georgia in 1992. - DW Read Photo/Jay

UP 1845 - a GP38-2 was built as MP 954. It was later renumbered
to MP 2105, then UP 2105. It was sold to HATX and became HATX 215,
then it was leased back to the UP and was delivered to the property
as UP 1845. It is scheduled to be renumbered to UP 345. - Steve

Alton & Southern GP38-2 #2000 - A&S 2000 was originally
built 1/73 as MP 930, then renumbered as MP 2081 and finally as
UP 2081 before going onto the A&S. The Alton & Southern
was, and still is, a switching railroad in the St. Louis area once
owned and operated by both MoPac and CN&W. After purchasing
the road on May 9, 1968, the two roads painted the A&S engines
with yellow hoods (after CN&W), blue cabs and frames (after
MoPac), and a hybrid herald for the A&S on the cab. The A&S
is still alive and well today, under the UP, and still uses the
old hybrid paint scheme - Jay
