Automatic Train Operation in Carol Lake. (Archives Nationales du Quebec)

Described as the ninth wonder of the world in the Iron Ore's corporative publication of 1978, the ATO is still in operation today. The automatic train was put in service in June 1962.  There are 8 locomotives available and each one is hauling or pushing 20 cars from the mine to the crusher on a round trip circuit. ATO locomotives are SW-1200 MG and were the first electrical locomotives produced by General Motor's EMD Division.

Proceedings of the fifty-third annual convention of the Air Brake Association in Chicago, Illinois in September 1961, relates the Iron Ore's ATO project.
