In the beginning, GP7 and GP9 were the common power of QNS&L. Today, GE Dash 8 and Dash 9 and rebuilt SD40-2 are mostly used. Some old Geeps are still seeing service in yard duty as converted slugs coupled to GP38's for remote controlled shunting.

The first SD-40's were bought in 1968. IOC acquired 20 engines, all of them equipped with dynamic brakes. Later, in the early seventies, the company opted for SD40-2 locomotives which are still used today. These units were rebuilt in the mid 90's at CLC shops in Montreal.
