INTRODUCTION
One of my readers, Greg Beecroft, has generously delved into his collection of photos of London Underground taken in the 1970's and 1980's and offered them for inclusion here.
They offer a fantastic reminder of days gone by, though still with connections to the present. The period in question was quite significant with several of the older stocks coming to the end of their service lives - the 1938 Tube Stock, the 1959 Tube Stock (at least on the Piccadilly Line with the introduction of the Heathrow service) and the CO/CP and R Stocks on the District Line; the C Stock having already been introduced on the Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines. It also saw of course the introduction of several new stocks to replace those being retired.
Greg has scanned these from his original slides - a long and laborious process - and I'm very grateful for the trouble he's taken to do this. I'm not sure that the way I'm presenting them here really does them justice.
Additionally he's added quite a bit of narrative to the e-mails with which he sent them by way of the background to the various occasions and, in some cases, the reasons why various things appear where they do! The introductions and observations on each collection are taken directly from his mails to me.
